I Took Lewis Hamilton MasterClass (Honest Thoughts)

Frankly, I didn’t think I would learn much from the Lewis Hamilton Winning Mindset MasterClass. Ten minutes into the class, I was eating my words. It isn’t just a class for aspiring athletes. The principle applies to many fields. It’s about growing as a person and being successful at whatever you want to do.
The first and only black driver in the Formula One race has many useful insights to share with you. Yes, some lessons are geared toward athletes, but most teach you valuable things for everyday life. Ready to see what’s in store for you and whether this class is worth your time? Let’s go, make no excuses now (sorry, that Calvin Harris song is stuck in my head).

What Will You Learn in Lewis Hamilton Masterclass?
Lewis Hamilton teaches us how to mentally prepare for ordeals and train our bodies to increase endurance. He shares his journey to explain the importance of facing risks and learning from failures. You will also learn how to gain sufficient strength to achieve your goals, no matter how unachievable they may seem.
Breakdown of Episodes
Hamilton’s MasterClass is 2 hours and 12 minutes long comprising 12 lessons. In each lesson, he shares his experiences throughout his journey to where he is today to make his advice have the desired impact. So, here’s what each episode has to offer:
Lesson 1: Meet the Instructor
In this 5-minute video, you get to know who Lewis Hamilton is, his struggles while training for what he loves, and his success. He is also very clear about the fact that what works for him won’t always work for you. He is a smart cookie; he understands everybody is unique. So, he tries to help us find what works for us. Let’s see how well he does that.
Lesson 2: Ignite Your Passion
This lesson is all about building resilience, determination, and a never-give-up mindset. He wants us to challenge ourselves and face our fears to unlock our full potential. He explains how he feeds his competitive spirit without pressurizing himself too much. He also talks about why not fitting in can be an asset.

Lesson 3: The Power of Influences and Inspiration
Do you have anyone in your life who inspires you? Or at least a person in your career field you see as a role model? If yes, great. If not, try to surround yourself with such people. Hamilton’s dad, Muhammad Ali, Ayrton Senna, and Nickie Lauda are some people who inspired Lewis in his life.
Why is it important to get inspiration? First of all, you can strive for success only if you have an idea of what it looks like. Second, when you achieve the same level of success they did, you get a sense of belonging. Lastly, these inspiring people can be your guiding light, consider them your northern star if you will.
Lesson 4: At One With The Machine
This 9-minute video is useful for racers and other athletes. Hamilton compares the sound of bumps and the screaming of car engines to guitar riffs. And, he thinks his cockpit is similar to a fighter jet’s; how cute. He also explains what it feels like to be racing at 200 miles/hour.
What can non-athletes learn from this? Be one with whatever you work with. In his case, it’s the racing car and his cockpit. For me, it’s my laptop. I love how the keys respond to my flying fingers caused by the nerves in my brain firing up and trying to bring words to life. Achieve that Zen Zone where nothing else matters.

Don’t worry if Hamilton’s explanation of the Zone perplexes you. Just watch Kuroku’s Basketball. You will understand the Zone athletes enter. Lewis then launches into an explanation of how race cars have ‘wings’ and what’s it like to experience the G-force. This cannot be spun to suit our work, but athletes will no doubt find it helpful.
Lesson 5: How To Deal With Failure
The greatest teacher, failure is (Master Yoda is awesome). Why am I quoting this now? Well, Hamilton says the same thing using different words. He concedes that trial and error is part of the process. He helps you understand how to use that failure to confront challenges. He also shares how he dealt with the rut caused by his failures.
Review your mistakes to determine what went wrong. Learn from it, set seemingly impossible goals, and strive to achieve them. Never forget why you started doing what you do. I must say, I found the man inspiring to a certain extent even though I normally don’t click with sportsmen.
Lesson 6: How To Build Trust And Promote Teamwork
When you try to bring out the best in people you are working with, they reciprocate. Hamilton’s intention is not to foster the quid pro quo mindset but rather ensure the smooth functioning of the team like a well-oiled machine. He believes building personal relationships and trust is the key to that. He elaborates on how to do that, too.

He has some stellar tips for leaders. Hamilton explains how what you do affects your team and why effective communication is crucial. After all, people aren’t psychic; you can’t expect them to know what your problem is. And, when you inevitably have some issues with a teammate, find a way to move forward. As Lewis said, you win and lose together.
Lesson 7: How To Exercise Self-Discipline
Set goals, build on them, and don’t get lazy – this is what the lesson is about. Of course, Hamilton isn’t this blunt. He explains the benefits of positive reinforcement (giving yourself little rewards for completing goals), taking a break, and controlling your emotions. A big chunk of the lesson is devoted to explaining how to keep calm under pressure.
His technique for conquering temptation reminded me of how recovering alcoholics keep liquor in their cabinets just to prove that it doesn’t have the same power over them anymore. I couldn’t stop grinning for some time. And, the man goes on to explain how he deals with anger, and I burst out laughing. I will give you a hint; it’s something we all want to do but usually don’t, and it’s effective. In short, learn to let it all out healthily.
Lesson 8: Optimize Your Body
Again, this is a lesson better suited for athletes. Nevertheless, we have something to learn here. Rigorous physical training to increase endurance helps prevent the brain/mind feel fatigued. God knows how many times I felt like someone was pounding on my head with a jackhammer while doing my job. But when you train your body, exhaustion doesn’t creep in that easily.
Hamilton provides great tips for recovery and emphasizes its importance. He then talks a bit about his relationship with his physiotherapist. His insights on how what you eat influences what you feel are great, but the problem is that they are spoken with fellow athletes in mind. Which is fine, as no way in hell am I giving up my pepperoni pizza to follow a vegan diet.
Lesson 9: Mental Preparations
The mind and body connection is stressed again in this lesson. Hamilton discusses various techniques for calming down, feeling great, and deflecting negativity. He explains how upsetting news can impact your performance and how he stays away from his phone to avoid such news the days before he has to race.

I have similar thoughts on this (but my thoughts are nowhere as refined as his). They are something along the lines of ‘Don’t pick up the blasted phone; you won’t get the bad news’. Deal with it later. I know your face is doing something when reading these lines. Let it go, we all know I am pretty weird by now.
Lesson 10: The Power Of Diverse Interests
Solely focusing on one thing isn’t healthy even if it’s work-related. Hamilton stresses the importance of indulging in whatever you’re passionate about without compromising your priorities. Only you know what is causing your performance decline (if it is indeed happening). So, try everything and do what feels right.
Lesson 11: Influence The World Beyond Your Own
Implement the changes you want to see in your life first. Then take others with you on the journey. The change he wanted to see was the production of sustainable clothing. He collaborated with Dior to create clothing with 80% sustainable material. A racer thinking about protecting the environment? That’s awesome.
After this, things get a little more serious. Hamilton emphasizes that you should support your community, and he explains how to do that. He speaks sincerely about how the Black Lives Matter movement affected him and how Mercedes stood by his side. He urges you to influence others to care about what’s happening in the world when you have their attention.
Lesson 12: Pave The Path For Others
The final lesson in this MasterClass is personal. He shares his experiences with false expulsion at the age of 15. His sadness is palpable when talking about how the ‘system’ fails the black community more often than not. He wishes you to speak up and ask those uncomfortable questions necessary to bring change.
He then goes into detail about how he is trying to help his community and bring in more people of color into his industry. The lesson and ergo the class ends with the message that different points of view from different people with different backgrounds are good.
