Learning a new language can be fun, or it could be a nightmare. You and I covet the former and avoid the latter like a plague. So, it’s unsurprising that your choice has boiled down to Lingopie or Mondly. One site is reputed for its entertainment value while the other is known for using technical innovations that make learning a pleasant experience.

What do you prefer: video-based language learning or gamified language lessons? While it is unwise to base your decision solely on the answer to that question, it certainly helps pick a side when you are on the fence about choosing a website.

What language learning methodology do these sites use? What kind of topics do they tackle? We will evaluate the various language learning platform features to ensure you make a well-informed decision. Assess the pros and cons (we provide) of choosing either website and pick the one that best suits you. Ready to embark on your language-learning journey?

Comparing Lingopie Vs Mondly

In this language learning apps comparison, we won’t just tell you which app has more courses or recommend choosing the least expensive one. We truly want your experience to be fulfilling. Therefore, we will analyze the effectiveness of each site in helping you achieve your goal and whether the price (if high) is justified by course quality. Let’s get on with it then.

Variety of Languages

It is no secret that Lingopie offers only ten languages (including English). On the contrary, Mondly can teach you 41 languages. Does this make Mondly the Defacto winner? No. It has the upper hand in this round but that doesn’t mean it is the best. Winning the battle doesn’t mean you won the war.

Lingopie has content for all the popular languages such as Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and the ubiquitous English. The probability of you wanting to learn a language it doesn’t offer is 2, 228.7 to 1. In case you are wondering, that’s my way of saying it is highly unlikely.

However, the platform loses points because if you change the base language from English to any of the five other language options, the languages you can learn become even more limited. For example, I changed the UI language to Italian and found that I could learn only five languages: Spagnola, Tedesco, Portoghese, Francese, and Inglese.

Mondly has courses for all these languages besides Danish, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Greek, Latvian, etc. You can find the entire list in the site’s FAQ section. The list is almost as good as Duolingo’s proving to be the greatest strength of this platform. The kicker? You can learn all these languages using your native language as the base, not just English.

✅ Winner – Mondly

Free Resources

While Lingopie offers a 7-day free trial, it doesn’t offer much free content or resources to aid your learning journey. The only free Lingopie resource you can use is its YouTube channels, and frankly, they are interesting but lack depth.

One of Lingopie’s blogs low-key brags about being a noteworthy example of a paid app that offers interactive learning. A lot of it is sounding its own horn, but some points make sense. A paid app provides you with more advanced features and tools. It doesn’t impose any restrictions and you are motivated to learn because you paid for using the app.

Mondly, too, has a similar perspective. The free version provides restricted access to free content. You can access the daily lessons, the introductory section, and a chatbot lesson. To progress beyond that, you need a subscription.

Sure, this is much more than what Lingopie offers, but it’s pathetic compared to the free versions of other language-learning websites. Fortunately, the Mondly language app free trial allows you to determine whether it is the right choice before subscribing to a plan.

✅ Winner – Mondly

Content Quality

Is Lingopie better than Mondly? There is no definite answer to that. The methodologies of both platforms vary so much that it would be illogical to say one is superior to the other. Instead, let’s focus on what’s unique about their content. Lingopie has incredible TV shows and movies for you to peruse.

The content of those series and films has enough depth to ensure you gain a well-rounded vocabulary bank. The native content language learning gives you an opportunity to study verbal and non-verbal clues. You will find content that best suits you irrespective of your learning level. Awesome, right?

Now, what about Mondly? The main difference is that it has structured courses. You can study the topic that best aligns with your learning goals. Does that mean the content is fantastic? Yes, for beginners it is an excellent resource. However, the content for intermediate and advanced learners leaves much to be desired.

✅ Winner – Lingopie

Learning Methods

Both platforms use interactive language learning methodology, and yet, they differ significantly. Lingopie uses interactive dual (source + target) subtitles. This ‘subtitle learning method’ is especially useful for people like me with short attention spans. Trying to discern what’s being said gets boring after a while and my in starts drifting.

But, add to that a way to read phrases and sentences in the target language, I become invigorated. Since you can compare the subtitles and learn the matching words quite easily, this became my favorite way of learning. Lingopie also provides speaking practice.

You can pause the video, tap on the microphone icon, and record yourself saying whatever dialogue caught your attention. It may not be one of the best speaking practice apps, but it sure makes the practice interesting. The listening comprehension tools are worth mentioning, too.

You can control the playback speed and/or use the loop setting to hone your listening skills. The video-based flashcards are fantastic learning resources, too. Some movie scenes will always be etched in our brains. When you learn a new word or phrase using that scene, unsurprisingly it sticks. Lingopie seems to think of everything.

Can Mondly put up a worthy fight in this round? Yes, it can. Its gamified elements make it a worthy contender for some great space repetition language apps. However, what sets it apart from the crowd is its AR language learning feature.

Mondly’s Augmented Reality (AR) feature makes learning a new language interesting. Virtual language tutoring doesn’t suit everybody’s taste. However, you can’t deny interacting with the things you learn about sounds fun. Banging on a cymbal, orbiting Saturn, and touching a guitar to make it play a song are all possible. What are your thoughts about this?

The VR feature facilitating immersive language learning ensures improved memory retention. All you need is an Oculus VR headset and a premium subscription. The realistic scenarios make it an unforgettable experience. You will understand the feeling the famous line ‘All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by’ is supposed to invoke.

The poem refers to the longing for the sea, here our longing is for understanding various languages and their cultures. So, is Mondly the right ship for you? In the Mondly vs Lingopie debate, it is clear that the former is the best app for beginners. So, perhaps, yes, Mondly might be the right choice for you.

✅ Winner – Both (as it is a matter of preference)

Progress Tracking & Learning Path

Lingopie has no learning path. It doesn’t even offer structured courses. It’s a TV-based language learning platform; did you really expect it to provide a learning path you can cruise through? On the brighter side, it does offer a progress tracker of sorts.

You can see in your personal toolbar how many words you learned, how many you reviewed, and what level you are at on a scale of 1 – 10. It also mentions the number of hours you binge-watched to give you an idea of how much you learn when you watch a show or film for an hour.

Smart idea if you ask me. Now I can argue that binging Netflix is geared towards skill improvement and back it up with statistics. I can hear myself going: What? It’s just another form of personalized language learning, I swear. Yep, that’s me, I can be pretty nuts when I want to be.

The Mondly language app lesson structure isn’t comprehensive, but it is still good. The learning path is presented in an appealing manner, making you want to quickly progress through it. And, the learning progress analytics are awesome. The statistics section shows how many hours you spent learning and the number of words and phrases you learned.

Mondly Language Learning Statistics

If you want to measure your progress through the number of lessons completed, that’s possible, too. Clicking on the lessons section helps you see what lessons you have progressed through and how well you did in them (you are rated using stars).

Both sites use quizzes to assess your mastery of new words; that’s the only thing they have in common. So, in terms of structured learning paths, progress trackers, and assessments, Mondly easily wins this round. However, this is simply a result of varying approaches to teaching. It doesn’t reflect poorly on Lingopie in any way.

✅ Winner – Mondly

Pricing and Value for Money

The Lingopie 3-month subscription plan costs $12/month, the yearly plan costs $5.99/month, and the lifetime subscription costs $199. They are relatively affordable compared to other paid language learning websites. Are the plans worth it? If you value multi-device language learning with the added entertainment elements, yes, they are completely worth it.

Lingopie Subscription Plans

Remember, the 3-month plan grants you access to only one language, while the other two provide access to all languages.

The Mondly language app subscription cost is less expensive. The one-month plan costs $10/month, the 12-month plan costs $4/month, and the lifetime access plan costs $99.

mondly premium

Only the lifetime plan grants access to all languages, the other two provide access to only one language. Again, are the prices worth the benefits reaped? Subscribing to any plan grants you free access to Mondly Kids, Mondly VR, and Mondly AR. If that’s something important to you, then the plans are worth it.

✅ Winner – Lingopie (because Lingopie is for everyone whereas Mondly is only for beginners)

Customer Support

Similar to most language learning platforms, these two sites provide underwhelming customer support. Especially, the Mondly language app customer support seems to be taking a hit. At least, they take the time to reply to unsatisfied customer reviews; so that’s something. Anyway, Lingopie has the upper hand here with fewer disgruntled reviews.

✅ Winner – Lingopie

Community

Mondly provides no direct means of interaction between learners. So, skip this site if you are a lover of the ‘social language learning’ approach.

On the other hand, Lingopie has an awesome, active Discord community to help you out whenever you feel stuck or just need fantastic recommendations about what to watch to improve your language skills.

✅ Winner – Lingopie

Accessibility and Device Compatibility

Lingopie has a web version and an app version. Both work great, though some complain about not being able to use Lingopie Netflix Extension effectively. Mondly, too, offers a web and main app version. However, the Mondly VR and AR apps do not have a web version. And, as I mentioned before, you need an Oculus VR headset to use the VR features.

I don’t have to get into the mobile vs desktop learning debate to stress the pros of both styles. They balance each other out; that’s why a site that offers both along with offline mobile learning gains more popularity. As Lingopie does exactly that, it wins this round hands down.

✅ Winner – Lingopie

Learner Reviews: What Other Users Say

Lingopie delivers on its promise. You learn using entertaining videos from Netflix and other platforms in the original language. Therefore, you start speaking like a native in a short time with enough dedication and consistent learning. The only thing people don’t like about Lingopie is the issue with subscription cancellation.

For some reason, this seems like a trying experience. On the contrary, Mondly is satisfying for beginners but frustrates intermediate and advanced learners with limited, shallow content despite claiming to be a platform for all level learners.

✅ Winner – Lingopie

Who Should Use Lingopie?

Do you learn better with visual clues? Are you a Netflix lover or binge-worthy shows in general? Lingopie effectively blends binge-watching and learning. So, if your answer to my two questions is yes, Lingopie is a platform you should definitely try using. Now, let’s dive into some pros of choosing this site:

  • Interactive learning.
  • Blockbuster film and TV content for learning.
  • Comparatively great grammar learning tools.
  • Mastery through Music.
  • Access to one of the best language learning communities.

Who Should Use Mondly?

mondly website

You are sure to love Mondly if you are a beginner who values gamification and loves learning in virtual environments. Also, Mondly is an excellent choice if your native language isn’t English. Let me list some reasons to choose Mondly:

  • It’s a pioneer among conversational practice apps.
  • Immersive learning.
  • A great choice for business language learning.
  • One of the best vocabulary-building apps available.
  • Relatively affordable.

Alternatives

1. Duolingo

The King of gamified learning, dear Duo, is the best alternative to Mondly and, to a certain extent, Lingopie. Duolingo has added a lot of new features, too. Now you can listen to DuoRadio – podcast-like radio shows hosted by our favorite characters! You can also play ‘Adventures’ as one of the Duo characters. All of this is available for free; I freaking love it.

2. Yabla

Yabla is a great alternate choice if you love Lingopie’s dual interactive subtitles but the platform just didn’t click for you. Yabla provides better pronunciation and dictation practice and the subscription costs are similar. Moreover, you can use news reports, interviews, and documentaries to learn in addition to the usual shows, films, and music.

3. Pimsleur

Pimsleur needs no introduction. Its reputation precedes it like Van Helsing’s; after all, it has been around for half a century. Anything that stands the test of time like that is worth spending your money on. Pimsleur’s hands-free learning and spaced repetition techniques are unparalleled. Never having to take notes is always a plus in my book.

4. Italki

This site may seem like the odd one out on this list, and it is. I chose this platform as it provides one-on-one live tutoring rather than gamification or video-based learning. You can only get so far by watching endless video lectures and playing games. Italki offers that required personal touch and it’s affordable, too.

Final Verdict: Lingopie Vs Mondly

So far, this article has compared and contrasted the various features of Lingopie and Mondly. Even though Lingopie seems like the victor, Mondly has its moments, too. So, in this final verdict, let’s see what’s the greatest strength of these platforms and why you should pick them.

Lingopie ensures you become familiar with natural speech patterns and gain cultural insights through watching entertaining content in your target language. This is its greatest strength, and the interactive dual subtitles are the reason you should opt to use it. You can’t see me, but I am literally heart-eyed when I am typing this.

Mondly’s greatest strength is its immersive learning methods. The reason you should choose this site is that you get to play around with a VR headset. I am not kidding, how cool is that? Though, it may not seem like a good idea when you think about how much lighter your pocket will be once you purchase the set. Eh, live a little and splurge, will you?
